Facebook New Aps: Private posts that disappear

Facebook New Aps, Private posts that disappear

Social networking site Facebook has launched a new app for iOS called Poke on Friday which erases pictures and messages within seconds of being sent. Using the social network’s “Poke” feature in order to send short text, picture and video messages as well as the more traditional poke. Users have the option of adding their location to each poke, as well as sending each message to multiple recipients at once.

Unlike traditional Facebook messaging, users can specify how long the message will be displayed before being destroyed. Each poke can be displayed for 1, 3, 5 or 10 seconds before being removed from the app entirely, and the app wil notify the sender if any recipients take a screenshot. Anyone concerned about potentially unwanted or inappropriate messages can block and report users from within the Settings menu.

The new app is similar to Snapchat, an app which is popular with younger age users, and which has gained a reputation as a tool for sending risque images. It also has similar message expiry and screenshot detection features. Pandodaily reported that Snapchat sees 50 million photos sent a day, and it would seem that Facebook sensed an opportunity to offer a similar feature to its billion or so active users, putting the app together in just under two weeks.

Unlike Snapchat which is available on iOS and Android, Poke is currently limited to those on Apple devices, with no word of whether a dedicated Android app is coming or not. Poke takes Facebook’s iOS app count to five, two of which are iPad-optimised, compared to only two on the Android platform.

A very sad day in Newtown, Connecticut

My heart goes out to all the families and loved ones who lost their little ones today.

-----------------

In one of the deadliest mass shootings in the United States, at least 26 people, including 20 children, have been killed at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, about 60 miles northeast of New York on Friday.

The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School appeared to be the US’ second-deadliest school shooting, exceeded only by the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007, in which 32 people, including two Indians, were killed and 17 others wounded.

The gunman, identified as Adam Lanza, killed his mother at their home and then opened fire inside the school. The 20-year-old killer, carrying at least two handguns, committed suicide at the school, bringing the death toll to 28, authorities said.

Nintendo's Wii U Japan debut

Nintendo's Wii U Japan

Nintendo’s Wii U home videogame console has made its debut in Japan. People are lining up to buy the new console.

The device is already sold out in many US stores and probably will be in short supply by the weekend, some analysts fear.

The videogame maker’s first home console since 2006 comes in two versions at 26,250 yen ($319) and 31,500 yen with a 6.2- inch (16 centimeters) touch-screen controller called the GamePad. U.S. customers bought 400,000 units in the first week of sales that started Nov. 18, the company said Nov. 26.

Wii U, equipped with a touch-screen controller called the Wii U GamePad, enables players to play games on a television display or on the GamePad screen.

The Wii U is probably Nintendo's biggest bet in the last 20 years as a company and keeping the sales momentum going after the holiday shopping season could be a challenge.
