Nissan recalls 640,000 more Altimas for Faulty Latch
DETROIT (AP) — Nissan is recalling an additional 640,000 more Altima sedans in the U.S. and Canada because of faulty latches that can cause hoods to fly up while driving. The recall includes Altima midsize cars from the 2013 through 2015 model years. With this new recall, the total number of vehicles recalled for the same problem is about 1.1 million.
In government documents, Nissan said that if the primary hood latch is not fastened properly, the secondary latch will not be able to hold the hood as designed causing it to fly when the vehicle is moving.
In 2013 the car company recalled 238,000 Altimas, 216,000 Nissan Pathfinders, Infiniti JX35s and QX60s for the same problem. They haven't finalized a fix for the problem.
Nissan has acknowledge of some reports in which drivers' hoods have popped open while driving, there are no injuries or accidents that have been reported.
Nissan will fix the recalled cars by either replacing the latch mechanism or modifying the latch lever. They will also clean the secondary latch joint. Nissan have made a public announcement for the affected cars to ensure that their hood is latched and locked if they cannot yet make it to a dealer to have their cars repaired.
